About Our Leadership
At Ruiz Grappling Academy, we offer Jiu Jitsu and wrestling classes taught by professionally trained professors and coaches. Ruiz Grappling Academy is an affiliate of the 4x world champion and 6th degree black belt Omar Salum and is led by head instructor Roger Ruiz.
INSTRUCTOR ROGER RUIZ
Roger Ruiz was born in Moreno Valley, Ca. He began his martial arts journey in 2011 when he started high school wrestling. He developed a great love for the sport. His performance landed him on the Varsity team as a freshman. In 2019 he started his jiu jitsu journey at Gracie Humaita Hemet under Omar Salum. Roger competed throughout every belt he’s achieved and has managed to make the podium in every tournament he’s competed in. He has been a part of his gym by teaching classes. In 2022 he built the wrestling program at San Jacinto Valley Academy as the Head Coach and now the Director of the program. Now he has opened his own academy affiliate of Omar Salum Jiu Jitsu. Roger is an innovative coach, tenacious competitor, and a driving force in the sport of wrestling and jiu jitsu.

Blue Belt : Houston International Open (Gi) IBJJF Championship 2020 Bronze Medalist
Purple Belt : JJWL 2023 San Diego Open (Gi) Gold Medalist
JJWL 2023 California Open (Gi) Silver Medalist
Brown Belt : JJWL 2023 The Worlds (Gi) Silver Medalist
Major accomplishment : Opening up a family gym with his wife and 2 daughters.
Joel Ruiz was born in Moreno Valley, CA and grew up loving the art of wrestling and Jiu Jitsu with his brother Roger Ruiz. He began his martial arts journey in high school as a wrestler on the varsity wrestling team. From there, he fell in love with the art. In 2019 he started his Jiu jitsu journey at Gracie Humaita Hemet under Omar Salum. Joel is currently a purple belt. Joel has competed through each of the different belts and won silver twice, which landed him on the podium, as a purple belt. Joel continues to compete and practice under Omar Salum Jiu Jitsu. Alongside Roger Ruiz, Joel has stepped into the Ruiz Grappling Academy as a partner and instructor. Joel will continue his journey until he has earned his black belt and the title of a professor. Joel is a coach who takes the time to evaluate each student and meet them where they are at. He knows them as an individual and shows perseverance as he helps them grow. He is always ready and willing to do what he can as a coach his students to ensure they are growing their knowledge and love for wrestling and Jiu Jitsu.

INSTRUCTOR JOEL RUIZ
I am a dedicated and experienced wrestler currently competing for Mt Sac Community College. With a passion for the sport and a drive to succeed, I have honed my skills both on the mat and as a coach. Over the past two years, I have gained invaluable coaching experience, helping to elevate individual athletes to new heights. One of my proudest accomplishments as a former high school coach was taking a student to the 2024 state qualifier, a feat that had not been achieved at Perris High in over a decade. This accomplishment solidified my belief in the power of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. I strive to instill these same values in my teammates and students, pushing them to reach their full potential both on and off the mat. As a current wrestler and coach, I am constantly seeking to improve and grow in my abilities. I am committed to pushing myself and those around me to be the best that we can be, both as athletes and as individuals.
